3 Excellent Reasons To Build An Online Store...Especially If You Already Have A Brick-And-Mortar Business

Calling all Brick-and-Mortar shops! You have done an amazing job opening the physical doors of your small business and welcoming customers in with open arms. You’ve honed your customer service practices and hired the best people. Although there have been many late nights and even more early mornings, it’s all been worth it.

You’re happy, but you really wish that you could generate a bit more revenue.

You could extend your hours to allow for more people to shop at your store, but in all honesty, you’re tired and fighting burnout.

Instead of burning the candle at both ends, have you ever considered selling your products through your website via an online store?

If not, here are 3 excellent reasons to build an online store for your Main Street business.

  1. Your loyal customers love you, and they would love to shop at your store online when they can’t make it in to see you in person.

Maybe you run a business in a tourist town and the majority of your revenue comes from customers who live out of state. What do they do when they go home? Probably look for what you sell online. But what if you could direct them to your online shop that they could check out from the comfort of their own home.

By not having an online store, you are denying them the opportunity to buy from you...TO GIVE YOU MONEY. You want to make more money, right? Your loyal customers love you and the products you sell. A lot of them would rather buy from you (hello #ShopSmall) that a big-box retailer. Having an online store allows you to connect with them even if they’re not walking through your front door.

(And in special circumstances...like say...during a pandemic, having an online store allows you to continue doing business even if your physical doors are closed.)
  1. Make money while you sleep.

Guess what? An online store is open 24x7. And you don’t have to hire additional people to manage it. All you have to do is upload the products you want to sell, tell people that your e-store exists, and wait for the orders to roll in. You don’t have to be up at 2am to check someone out who wants to buy a water bottle. Nope. You can sleep soundly through the night knowing that your e-store is fully functional and ready to take orders at any moment.
  1. Get out of the rut of the seasonality of your business.

OK…you will probably still have some seasonal peaks and valleys when it comes to how much revenue you’re generating throughout the year, but what if you could flatten those peaks and valleys? What if the landscape looked more like the rolling plains instead of the Grand Canyon? If you’ve been collecting your customers’ email addresses (which you should be...and you should be telling your customers what you’re going to say to them when you do email), you can build meaningful relationships with these folks. Whether they live down the street or in a different country, let your fans know about your big bi-annual sales (and all the other important things going on at your shop). Get rid of last season’s stuff faster by letting the world know what you’re in-store AND online! Set up a promotion like: FREE SHIPPING WITH A $99 ORDER. Wouldn’t you be excited to wake up to five, $99-orders? That means that you made almost $500 while you were sleeping! Making money while you sleep is both smart and attractive.

There are many more reasons why you should open an online store, and we could go on and on, but it really comes down to this: your customers LIKE you. And they WANT to buy from you. Make sure to give them the opportunity to do so by opening an online store.

Because if you don’t, your competition will.
